Sugarloaf

From Praia Vermelha, the visitants take the first tram links to the Urca hill, and from there, a second tram takes them until the top of the Sugar loaf hill, it stays 396 meters of the sea level. Different histories justify the name of this touristic side; the most popular says that during the centuries XVI and XVIII, at the peak of the production of sugar cane, the producers stored sugar blocks in little boxes to be exported, and the resemblance of the object with Sugar loaf mountain gave origin to the name.

Inaugurated in 1912, the little tram of the Sugar loaf was the first Brazilian cable car and the third in the world, linking the Urca hill to the Sugar loaf mountain. Since then, more than 40 million of people have already used that cable cars.

From the high of the two mountains revels a gorgeous landscapes of the city, including the Botafogo cave, Copacabana edge and the entrance of Guanabara bay. In the summer, the amphitheater, located in the top of Urca hill is a stage for shows and night events, joining fun and a wonderful visual of lights of the city.

Youths and kids of 6 to 21 years old, students, seniors and deficient have 50% off. Kids under 6 years old don’t pay.

Christ the Redeemer

In the top of the mountain is installed Christ the redeemer, one of the most wanted touristic sides of Rio de Janeiro. Biggest and most famous scripture Art Déco of the world, the Christ statue started to be planned in 1921 and it was developed by the engineer Heitor da Silva Costa over 5 years of job, from 1926 to 1931, the opening year of the monument.

It’s located at Parque Nacional da Tijuca, 710 meter above the sea level, where anybody can appreciate one of the most beautiful views of the city. Over all 220 steps that lead to the famous statue feet, it was elected one of the Seven Wonders of the World made by formal voting in 2007 by the Swiss Institution New 7 Wonders Foundation. The monument is accessible by train, van or car.

To get into the monument, there’s a nice ride by train that, during 20 minutes, it crosses Mata Atlântica until Corcovado’s top. Making an easy access to the visitants, three panoramic elevators and four escalators were built. The visual is amazing; it makes an unmissable programme for those that visit the city.

Santa Cruz da Barra Fortress

The walls of the Santa Cruz da Barra Fortress were erected in 1555 using rocks that were cut and settled by hand. Located on the entrance of the Guanabara Bay, it has 45 cannons from the 18th and 19th centuries and a chapel built in 1612 with a 18th century image of Santa Bárbara. The São Luiz Fortress finished building in 1775 and has a collection of cannons of different calibers that were used during the 2nd World War and were brought to Brazil as wars trophies. On the top of the Pico Fort, the visitors will be surprised with a 360º view that encompasses the Santa Cruz Fortress, the city of Rio, the entrance of the Guanabara Bay, the Corcovado and the Sugar Loaf. Built in 1555, Barão do Rio Branco Fort is the oldest one in the complex, and was the place in which the Dutch squad and the Duclerc French expeditions were defeated.

Ilha Rasa Lighthouse

The island is inhospitable, surrounded by steep rocks and has no beach, which makes landing on the island very complex and difficult. But those who look more closely at the horizon from the edge of Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon, at night, must have already seen flashes of white and red cutting through the darkness of the sea. The luminous signs are from the Ilha Rasa Lighthouse, which building was authorised by D. João VI in 1819 and marked by several historical events. It construction was finished in 1829, and became the first Lighthouse to be open after Brazilian Proclamation of Independence. At the time of construction, at the highest point of the island, the lighthouse was also used as a military headquarter, housing artillery pieces that are still preserved today. The place also functioned as a political prison where the anarchist José Oiticica and other prisoners were held during the government of Getúlio Vargas. In addition, the Rasa Island Lighthouse has been the scene of films and inspired poets and musicians such as Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Edu Lobo. Currently, it is administered by the Brazilian Navy, being an important instrument of navigation control due to its strategic location. The Brazilian Navy maintains a fixed garrison on the island, where there is now a helipad, but supply is still done by sea. For logistical and environmental reasons, there is no public visitation to the Lighthouse.

Museum of Tomorrow

Questions like “where did we come from?” and “where are we going?” pervade the thoughts of the world’s population and are common among all peoples. Reflecting on these questions, as well as others, the visionary project of the Museu do Amanhã(Museum of Tomorrow) took shape and became an ample space for debating and studying the impact of our actions and how we can alter the decaying scenario that draws close.

Institutions with worldwide renown, such as the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Google and NASA are part of the collective effort that studies how individuals can change our destiny on Earth. The Museum of Tomorrow is a pioneer project:there is no place like this one in the whole worldwhere cultural and research activities have this aim of studying our tomorrow.
