How can you be in Kolkata and not have Mishti doi?As I walked across the breakfast spread of a leading hotel in Kolkata this morning I was quite disappointed not to see Mishti doi around. I walked across to the captain and asked almost in an innocent, curious yet upset voice - I don’t see Mishti doing around, am I still sleepy? Pat came the reply, Sir, it’s not on the menu today, you could possibly have it for lunch or dinner. Feeling remorse, I walked back to my table uneasy and restless. Kept my plate down and went back to him. This time in an assertive yet respectful tone. Sir, I have a long work day ahead and I am keenly looking forward to having some Mishti doi, can you please help me?As I walked towards him multiple thoughts ran through my head.1. Is this a battle worth fighting for early in the morning? (Akin to energy conservation)2. What if he says ‘No’ again - would I be able to digest that rejection (Akin to fear of failure and knowing that if you don’t try the answer will be No - but why try when you know the answer will be No)3. Will I be able to walk back to my table and digest what’s in my plate? (Akin to over thinking and being in inertia)4. What’s the big deal if I don’t have Mishti doi today. (Akin to killing your simple desires)I wouldn’t deny these thoughts did play in my head, but I mustered the courage and asked. The results are in the picture.Once again my beliefs were reaffirmed.1. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.2. If you get a No, find ways to convert it into a Yes.The same holds true even with team members, bosses, clients and back home too.
