Our family loves a good football game and we also love to host and entertain friends. So a game day party is always a welcome event in our home. We invited three couples over for a little pot-luck style football-themed party and we enjoyed a fun evening with our friends!

Football has been a huge part of my life. For nearly a decade I attended a football game every weekend in the fall. From junior high through college I had the privilege of cheering on my hometown football team – including the University of Alabama – a top ranking college football team – while I was in school. I am no stranger to football parties and I always love a great football game!

My Game Day party food idea was inspired by the decorations we used to create for homecoming every year at school. We called it “pomp”. It basically was tissue paper partially pushed through chicken wire to create an image. In the case of my old photograph (far left), we used it to create a scene with the opposing team’s kicker kicking the football into the hands of our defense. (Um – I think we were rubbing their noses into a mistake they’d made the year previous – crazy college kids!)

If you’re planning a football party I recommend drawing on the fun experiences from your enjoyment of football in years’ past. It’s a great way to find inspiration.

Football Party Supplies

I picked up everything I needed for this Game Day Football party at Walmart. The football field tablecloth, plates, and napkins were in their party supply section. I also found the balloons, streamers, and other blue and orange party decor there. Our home football team’s colors are orange and blue. All of the ingredients for my Pineapple Game Day Party Float with Cheez-Its and Pringles came from the grocery department at my local Walmart Super-Center. You can find most of the items on the chips aisle but the Cheez-It Crunch’d chips can be found on a free-standing display.

For our football party and game day celebration, I decided to “pomp” a pineapple. Taking the flavors of a yummy, delicious and fruity pineapple and turning them into a scrumptious dip seemed like the perfect way to create a memorable and edible centerpiece for our football party. I turned our party food into a float with the rich cheddar flavors from Cheez-It Grooves crackers and the zesty and salty flavors of Pringles chips. I think it looks like a party float worthy of a Game Day parade. It’s easy to make and a fun and memorable centerpiece for any party!

Pineapple Cream Cheese Recipe

This recipe is easy to create and is incredibly flexible for a variety of edible party decorations. I think you could create nearly any game day float-style centerpiece using this method.

Ingredients

1 – Box of Cheez-It Grooves (we like Original Cheddar)
1 – Can Pringles Original Chips
1 – Can Pringles Tortillas – Zesty Salsa
1 – Can Pringles Tortillas – Truly Original
1 – Whole Pineapple – find one with a pretty top
2 – Cans of Crushed Pineapple – drained
4 – 8 oz packages of Cream Cheese
2 – Packages Sazon Seasoning
1/2 – Teaspoon Paprika
4 to 6 Broccoli Crowns
1 Large Green Leaf lettuce head
1 Red Bell Pepper

Directions

1. Wash and dry all produce, and peel the pineapple.I always wash everything first – the broccoli, lettuce, pineapple, and red bell pepper. Be careful not to poke yourself with the pineapple when you wash it. I dried everything carefully. Peeling the pineapple requires attention to detail. The juicy fruit is just underneath the skin. You’ll want to use a sharp knife and cutting board to trim just the skin off the pineapple. I left some of the grooves/dark areas intact to leave some roughage for the cream cheese to adhere.

2. Pat your Pineapple Dry. The key to making this project work is to keep all pineapple involved as dry as possible. I patted my pineapple with paper towels after I trimmed off the skin. Wet pineapple will soften the cream cheese making it tough to add the Cheez-Its to the exterior. In addition, you’ll need to drain your crushed pineapple (from cans) in a strainer and then use paper towels to dry it even more.

3. Mix Ingredients. Once you have dry pineapple pulp, you can add it to the cream cheese. At first, I tried a hand-held blender but I eventually moved to using a fork since blending with the mixer was taking more work. But the blender did help me break up the cream cheese in the beginning so I still recommend using it. As I mixed, I added in the Sazon seasoning and the paprika. It gives the mix a nice orange color and a touch of saltiness to balance the sweet cream cheese and pineapple taste.

4. Spread the cream cheese onto the pineapple. I used a cake icing decorating spatula for this task. Since I’d left some of the grooves in the pineapple, the cream cheese mixture adhered rather nicely.

5. Add the Cheez-Its. Once my pineapple was covered in my Pineapple Cream Cheese Dip, I pressed Cheez-Its to the exterior. It made for a beautiful pineapple float appearance. I created a half-circle on the edge of my display dish with the remaining pineapple cream cheese dip. This recipe makes a ton of party dip. Since it includes four bars of cream cheese, it can easily feed a crowd of guests.

6. Add the greenery. Since I wanted to create a parade float feel to our centerpiece, I used broccoli crowns and green leaf lettuce to decorate the party platter. Just trim to fit and add it to your plate. Make sure to leave room though, you’ll need it for your Pringles flowers.

7. Add your Pringles Flowers. The unique arched shape of Pringles chips lends perfectly to creating flowers for the pineapple centerpiece and party float. Arrange the chips in a circle with the arch pulling inward and the leaf of each petal gently arching outward. To create the colorful center of each flower I cut a piece of red bell pepper into a small rectangle. You could also use the small squares from the new Cheez-Its Crunch’d chips.

I created a second centerpiece and alternated a variety of Pringles chips including The Original, Pringles Tortillas Truly Original, and Pringles Tortillas Zesty Salsa. You’ll see the second version in some of my other photographs.

For our party, I set the pineapple, Cheez-Its and Pringles centerpiece at our breakfast table surrounded by serving ware to make it easy for guests to help themselves to this yummy appetizer. Everyone commented on what a tasty and fun appetizer I’d created. It was a great party food for our Game Day party.

Other Football Party Recipes

Football Cookies

To create the football cookies, I used almond bark melted in a double boiler. Then I coated one side of some football shaped cookies with the melted chocolate-flavored almond bark. Once the almond bark dried I decorated the cookies with white cookie icing. I used the icing to draw football laces onto the cookies. It’s a super easy game day recipe you can easily recreate for your football party.

First and Ten Punch

Another super-easy recipe is this First and Ten Punch. I combined a six pack of pineapple juice cans with one two-liter of a clear lime-flavored soda. I then added a few scoops of sherbert ice cream to create a sweet and fruity punch. This punch is also inspired by the pineapple theme.

Pringles Chips and Salsa

We served the Pringles Tortillas chips that were not used in the Pineapple Float Centerpiece with some medium heat salsa. They were delicious.

Football Party Games

Ice Breaker

A fun and easy ice breaker for helping guests meet each other is a matching game. I simply write words that go together onto separate name tags and stickthem to the back of each party guest. Party guests can ask each other “yes” and “no” questions until they figure out what word or group of words is on their sticker. Then they have to find their match. You can make it a speed game by giving a prize to the first team to find their match, or you can keep it easy-going with no time limit.

Other gameday games you can try:

A race to see who can paint their own face in the team’s colors the fastest – you’ll need face paint for this activity.
Set up a play football field and “kick” a paper football through homemade goal posts by flicking a wadded up piece of paper through the goal. Set up teams, use a timer and make it fun!
If you make my football cookies, you can set up a relay race to race the cookies balanced on a fork or large spoon across the room. The first team to cross the finish line wins. Warning – this game may result in broken cookies.
