Interesting read regarding fair access to university in Scotland. For those unaware, my Doctoral Research Thesis focused on the psychology behind aspirations of going to university for those from non-traditional university applicants (first in family to apply to university, carers, those with additional support needs, mature applicants and those living in particular socioeconomic areas and attending schools with low progression rates to university). I worked closely with Newcastle University ‘s widening access programme PARTNERs to complete my research. I’m happy to share my findings with those who may be interested in my research. I focused on theories of motivation and aspirations and explored that it much more complex than simply ‘raising aspirations’, despite this being the prominent narrative surrounding many policy leaders and some historic widening access initiatives in the UK. My research found that the aspirations of attending university were already there and that it was more about the structural barriers that prevented people who wanted to attend university progressing to higher education. A key finding from my study was the importance of having a key figure (family member, teacher, peers, other important people in their life) believe in the individual’s competencey in achieving access to university. Also it was important to reduce the structural barriers with regards to finances, student support and entry requirements.Happy to discuss this in more detail. Please feel free to reach out to me if you’d like more information or access to my Thesis. I also appreciate that the university route isn’t for everyone and is not a measure of success on its own as there are many ways of achieving aspirations without having to attend university. John H. Our founding Director Jon Molver was at the NASCEE conference on Wednesday, moderating a panel discussion with Western Cape Education Department officials Haroon Mohammed and Jacqui/ Jacqueline Boulle on “What makes for effective partnerships with government”. Both shared stories of successful partnerships, highlighting that above all, shared objectives are fundamental to the success of partnerships. Both also helpfully outlined what it is that both parties can bring to effective partnerships. Government needs civil society to contribute: - A deep understanding of the local context- Extensive networks- NPO’s resources and expertiseIn return, government offers the following:- Access- A substantial platform for growth and scale- AdvocacyFinally, our government representatives gave us 3 things civil society should start doing, 2 things we should stop doing, and 1 thing we should keep doing. In their views, NPO’s should: Start- Viewing government as a partner- Talking, and working together collaboratively with other NPO’s- Developing better M&EStop- Being territorial and competitive- Viewing government as a source of fundingKeep on- Telling the human storyIt was so refreshing to attend and assist at a civil society networking event that had gone to the trouble of inviting government to join. Kudos to NASCEE for leading the way on this, and to Western Cape Education Department for being ready, willing and available to give insightful, honest and helpful feedback to the sector. More collaborative, honest and open sessions like this across sectors will most definitely contribute to us#WorkingBetterTogether, and to a stronger, equitable education system.

‼️Erasmus funding under threat‼️"The leaked proposal pictures three scenarios for cutting EU funding, including on EU programmes. Those proposals outline a cut of between 3,4% to 13,5% for the Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe programmes. In more concrete numbers, this would be translated into a cut of €0.4 billion to €1.7 billion for the Erasmus+ Programme for 2025-2027." It's heartening to see twenty-four leaders from diverse sectors in Northern Ireland selected for the 2023 Fellowship Programme. With the support of several prominent businesses and organizations, this program highlights a commitment to the region's growth and development. The program's focus on nurturing leadership skills and addressing complex issues like climate, energy, sustainability, and conflict management is commendable, particularly given the unique challenges facing Northern Ireland. However, it's essential to consider whether the selection process adequately represents Northern Ireland's multi-racial and multi-cultural communities in 2023. Inclusivity and diverse representation are vital for the success of such initiatives, and it's worth examining whether these communities were sufficiently included among the chosen fellows.Initiatives like these offer hope and opportunities for leaders to bridge gaps, establish meaningful connections, and collectively work toward a brighter and more inclusive future for Northern Ireland.Collaboration, and positive transformation! 💪🌟 #LeadershipDevelopment #NorthernIreland #InclusionMatters
